Diary of a Madman

The Found and Final Chapters of "Diary of a Madman"

I have reason to believe I am not in Spain. I have reason to believe I am not anywhere known to persons on Earth. I was once a titular-councilor and in love with a beautiful woman named Sophie, but a dog came between us -- that much, I remember. But this place -- where am I? It is a kind of hell for sure. A woman came to visit me, she said she was my mother, I said I would be happy to be her son, she wept over me and I over her, and then I asked what brought her before the King of Spain and she was shown out before she was able to answer.

It was peculiar.

My head is still shaven. I have gotten hold of this paper from a man who was not looking. Then I got a quill. I am writing to my subjects to warn them that a most heinous crime is afoot. That's right, a heinous crime -- involving the person of your King! I have reason to believe that he has been abducted and taken to Hell! Satan himself has imprisoned him in a torture chamber, shaven his head and pours cold water on it daily, torturing him with cold water always, it is unbearable!

Loyal subjects, it is to you that I write, that I beg -- I, your King, reduced to a shambles, a pathetic heap of I don't know what. Remember your King, Spaniards! Remember my mother, a Russian! She weeps for me and I for her! If you have not the heart to be moved by my misfortunes, at least be moved by hers, she who cried over my poor shaven head. Ah! But what can be done?

I attempted an escape a fortnight ago.
I had one foot out a window -- this after breaking a stool over one of the devils' heads who daily torments me. Satan himself pulled me back in by my ears and hung me by my heels against the wall. Upside down I hung there for 3 years, though only 2 weeks passed -- how this is so is a mystery to me, but it is Hell and in Hell I believe time passes in not quite the same manner that it does elsewhere.

Oh how I wish to be out of here! May the good God above see my plight and forgive me my sins -- pray for me, subjects! Pray for your King! Forgive the dog Fidele who has betrayed me and my desires! I forgive the dog from the bottom of my heart! Though sometimes I am quite certain I would murder that dog should I ever cross paths with it again
