Who is your audience?

A health counseling professional that is currently hiring for a management position in nutrition at a health and beauty spa.

The audience would be interested in this topic because there are many healthier ways to lose weight than with the use of dietary aids. The information about the prevalence of height and weight concerns among young women could be relevant to their line of work.

What is your purpose for writing the document?

The purpose of writing this document is to point out the risky trend in young females and provide healthier alternatives. As an aspiring nutritionist, I would also like to show my competency on the subject.

What are the most important details or concepts you want your audience to take away after reading your letter?

That there is a serious problem in our culture that deals with improper nutrition and short cuts to weight management that do not pay off and risk the health of the individual.

Unit 6 Assignment

Our culture has set a high standard on physical appearance and beauty that commonly influences young women. These young women are often swayed to believe that there are easy solutions to weight management and these solutions are sold in bottles. The journal article 'Use of Diet Pills and Other Diet Aids in a College Population with High Weight and Shape Concerns' by Celio, et al. (2006) sought to establish the extent of diet aid usage amongst college-aged women, and identify the psychosocial and demographic drivers of the same. The results showed a substantially high diet aid usage rate among college women, with a significant 32.
4% indicating that they had used diet aids at least once over the period of interest.

There are really two factors at play that put pressure on this demographic. First there are the busy and hectic lifestyles that constitute a modern life. With this type of lifestyle pressures it is common for individuals to neglect their diet. Furthermore, the typical Western diet is characterized by an over consumption and reduced variety of refined sugars, salt, and saturated fat (Myles, 2014). However, at the same time there is also cultural pressure to conform to the ideals of health and beauty which include images of slim figures. It is quite evident that women with high weight and shape concerns are more at risk of developing eating disorders -- particularly anorexia nervosa and bulimia -- and are hence, more likely to indulge in diet aids.

Alternatives to this situation do exist however and weight management is not necessarily cause for concern. Through proper diet and exercise these demographics could be taught healthy ways to manage their bodies that are….....
