DISCUSSION BOARD RESPONSE TO CLASSMATESEpigenetics/Pharmacogenetics Discussion Board Response to ClassmatesSchiele, Gottschalk, and Dormschke (2020) reviewed the existing knowledge to determine how changes in epigenetics can serve as markers to predict how psychotherapeutic interventions respond clinically, and how they serve as useful markers to potentially reverse and alter risk patterns associated with epigenetics. The authors based their review on a recent research that showed that epigenetic signatures act as risk factors for the development of a variety of mental disorders. The authors explain how genetic factors and environmental factors contribute to increased risk of mental illnesses. First, the authors found that genetic factors contribute to the process of pathogenesis in mental health disorders (Schiele et al, 2020). Essentially, chromosomal loci and genetic variants such as neuropeptides and neurotransmitter are associated with increased risk of mental disorders. On the other hand, environmental factors such as exposure to childhood adversities and psychosocial stressors also contribute to increased risk of mental health disorders.
