The yearly economic costs of obesity are estimated to be more than 70 billion dollars. Despite the health and economic burden of obesity, studies show that health professionals do not constantly advise overweight and obese patients that they should lose weight. There is undoubtedly a global epidemic of overweight and obesity. It can be projected that, at the present rate of increasing prevalence of obesity, by the year 2030, 90% of U.S. adults will be obese (Lifestyle Management of Adult Obesity, 2010).

The epidemic of obesity really began in 1980 and in almost all countries has been rising inexorably ever since. It wasn't until 1997 that the World Health Organization accepted that this was a major public health problem and, even then, there was no accepted method for monitoring the problem in children (James, 2008). The obesity epidemic is an actual and potential public health crisis. Higher BMI has been associated with premature mortality. In one study, male and female non-smokers who were obese at age 40 died 6 -- 7 years earlier than their non-obese equivalents. Obesity is associated with hypertension, dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance, the secular trends in these conditions should indicate the emerging disease impact of the obesity.....
