Criminal Justice Courts System

I visited Monroe County Family Court that is located in 106 South Court Street in Lewisburg West Virginia on December 1, 2016. During this visit, the judge, Judge David M. Sanders, was presiding over a domestic violence case. I was really impressed by Judge Sanders because he had everything under control and ensured that the proceedings moved forward seamlessly and efficiently. Judge Sander ensured that everything was under control through speaking clearly and distinctly in a manner that could be heard by everyone in the courtroom. This made it easy for me and other people in the courtroom to follow the proceedings and understanding the issues before the court.

I was really impressed with the courtroom as I walked in since it reflected what I thought it was going to look like. Having watched television shows and legal drama movies, I knew what to expect in terms of how a courtroom looks like. My first impression of this courtroom is that it exceeded my expectations of what a courtroom should look like. Despite being a relatively small courtroom, everything was properly arranged and clearly demarcated to ensure that everyone who attended court proceedings was comfortable and could easily follow the case. In addition to proper arrangement, everything in the courtroom including the benches looked beautiful and comfortable.

The courtroom atmosphere was comfortable to everyone attending its proceedings regardless of which side of the case they represented or were interested in. It was relatively small court that was properly arranged as previously mentioned.

The courtroom was clearly divided into different sections and has sufficient space for spectators or observers. The judge had his bench at the front where he could see everything that was going on in the courtroom. The prosecution and defense teams sat on two different sides facing the judge while spectators section was behind them. There was enough space between the judge and the spectators, which was utilized during cross-examination by the prosecutor and defense attorney. There was a relatively small table before the judge where physical evidence, except documents relating to the case was placed. In essence, the courtroom was fairly small but properly arranged to accommodate everything needed in its proceedings.

Judge Sanders' handling of the domestic violence case was very fair since he gave the prosecution and defense adequate time to present their arguments and/or cross-examine witnesses. The judge sat quietly and only made necessary interruptions when the attorneys were arguing the case. He displayed patience in his interruptions and was a very good listener. Throughout the proceedings, the judge did not display inappropriate facial expressions or emotions but was seemingly cautious when interrupting or giving instructions regarding the proceedings. I thought this was a very fair incident given that judges sometimes display some impatient in their comments characterized….....
