This field is perhaps the most important development to environmental science in the past century precisely because now we have a much deeper understanding of how and why humanity influences the natural environment around us, deeply contributing to our awareness and knowledge of environmental damage and the harmful affects of pollution. Overall, it is evident that ecology has expanded at a tremendous pace because it has increased the scope that the field itself examines. By including human ecology as one of its disciplines, ecology now takes on significance not only as a scientific field but in both economic and political terms as well.

The field of ecology is dynamically growing as the scope of the science and its application increases. Several reasons can be attributed to the future growth of ecology as a field and its consequent future career options. First, the growth of human ecology is perhaps the biggest area of expansion that will lead to dynamic growth. Since the 1970s, the U.S. government has spent ten times more on scientific research concerning the human impact on the environment (Davis, 581). It figures that with the greater emphasis that the world government has placed upon environmentalism that even more research and energy will be poured into examining the relationship between humanity and their impacts on environments. With this field rapidly growing, ecology itself is seeing a reinvention. Unlike other sciences which oftentimes are considered "pure science," ecology has a very strong root within politics and economics. This is demonstrated by the current through the popular implementation of "Green GDPs" to in most country's estimations of their own economies.

Overall it is easy to see that there will be many different directions that ecology can expand. Thanks to its prominent role within politics and economics, it will be a thoroughly funded and influential discipline for the future.
