At first, he wanted recognition, but later he shuns this and turns his thoughts to the fact that he is doing what he set out to do, and doing it better than anyone else. In the end, right before he dies, he imparts information that changes the whole nature of the story, and when this happens one is left to wonder if all of the talk earlier about wanting recognition and appreciation was simply the disguise that the hunger artist had to shield himself from what his actually concerns and problems were.

9. There are three different ways that "The Visit" can be examined. First, there is the male/female relationship issue, and there is strong support that this was what Durrenmatt was talking about. The interaction between Claire and Anton is an exaggerated but understandable showing of the love/hate relationship that many men and women develop for each other through unrequited love and the passions of youth, which sometimes do not fade and die out, no matter how much time goes by, and are often remembered quite differently by both parties.
There is also support, however, for the idea that the story is of a karmic nature, owing to cause and effect. The killing of Anton seems not to come from the fact that everyone hates him, but from the fact that they grow to convince themselves that they hate him because of the money that Claire has chosen to give them. When they buy things on credit and then realize that they cannot pay for them and Claire was not joking, they choose Anton's death over the giving up of what they have acquired. Lastly, some feel that morality is the central issue. The morality in the story changes over time, as the people of the town come to feel that Claire is their salvation and Anton is the one that has condemned them to poverty. This takes place despite the fact that it is Claire who bankrupted the town, which shows how morals are adjusted to fit what each….....
