Genetic engineering is one of the more controversial and complex areas of science and engineering, and it intersects with sustainability in a variety of ways. Proponents of the science say that it can lead to greater sustainability through the more efficient use of land and the creation of bigger and better food supplies. Critics point out that the promise of such crops has been around for some time with little results, while there are very real negative effects.

Local Government World Congress focuses on solutions (James Brooks, Nation's Cities Weekly): A total of almost two thousand leaders of municipalities from around the world met in Korea in November of 2007 to unveil and discuss various sustainability methods. From city planning to power use and many other applications, there were a great deal of different technologies demonstrated and discussed at the meeting in an effort to create more sustainable practices at the local level.
