It has been estimated that in the Midwest, where infestation levels have been notoriously high, that "hundreds of millions of dollars in maintenance and damage repair" have been direct consequences of zebra and quagga mussel invasions (Arizona Game and Fish Department, n.d.). There are as many as 10 trillion quagga and zebra mussels in the Great Lakes today (National Wildlife Federation, n.d.).

Based on what is known about zebra and quagga mussels, it is hypothesized that their populations can be reduced using systematic methods of cleaning boats and monitoring local and especially man-made waterways. It has been shown that man-made waterways such as canals can act as "superhighways" particularly conducive to the rapid spread of the quagga and zebra larvae (National Wildlife Federation, n.d.). Ballast water regulation has been shown to be an effective preventative measure, but it is not the only means by which to curb the growth of quagga and zebra mussel populations (National Wildlife Federation, n.d.).
