Essentially, the public has a right to be informed, especially about events concerning public figures like Damar Hamlin that occur in a very public place—i.e., at a nationally-televised live event. However, this right must be balanced against Hamlin\'s medical privacy right and the potential distress that could be caused to his family.
Likewise, it must be remembered that the traditional role of media as gatekeepers is diminished in today’s world of social media. Information spreads rapidly on social media, often without filters or ethical considerations. Citizen journalists are not professionals and are not held accountable or kept to the same standards of conduct as professionals. The Kobe Bryant incident shows the kind of distress that can be caused when families learn about personal tragedies through the media. That said, a lot of social media users are still dependent on professional news outlets for information.
