What types of information does one need to gather to successfully design and implement a training solution?

The first question to consider when evaluating the training needs of various employees and designing a training solution would include -- what experience do the prospective users have with the types of applications and knowledge required to embark upon the proposed training course and successfully complete it? If the experience with the applications is minimal, it might be necessary to have instructors to facilitate the introduction into the new application, or to expand the training solution to include more remedial skills work.

Next, a training designer would have to ask what level of computer or Internet skills do the users have -- are these skills similar to those required by the new application or are they profoundly different? If profoundly different, the training procedure and even the initial assessment procedure itself may need be more rigorous than if one is dealing with a relatively computer-comfortable less workforce, even if they are familiar with the applications used, and the system builds upon the old one. Lastly, an important consideration is if the prospective learners have the technology available to access the training course content and complete all coursework at their current workstations? Or will it be necessary to take time out from work and orient the workers to the new system.

What implications does data gathering have for instructional design planning?

Data gathering regarding users is best done early on in designing the curricula of the training plan. Potential users, before they embark upon training can take online self-assessments, whose scores can be tabulated and recorded in such a fashion to determine areas of potential skills weaknesses amongst the staff. The IT personnel designing the training instruction can target these weaknesses and determine how time and resources can be best expended when designing and plan the instructional procedures, especially if these instructional must be lengthy and take considerable time out of the regular work schedule. Case studies, tests, work samples, customer studies, surveys, and interviews, all provide a potentially rich source of data. ("Perform a Front End Analysis," 2003)
