Stakeholder Barriers

The use and promotion of evidence-based healthcare is faced with resistance. Nurses across the globe have continually faced obstacles to their effort to universally embrace the approach. The key players in the implementation of evidence-based practice include staff in hospitals. There are two major barriers that continue to impede the effort to change to the new healthcare practice. Cultural barriers alone, or accompanied with red tape in institutions, and the poor knowledge were picked out as the main stumbling blocks (Tacia, Biskupski, Pheley & Lehto, 2015). The willingness of the staff to embrace care tasks and roles that are meant for intervention determines the level and magnitude of the barriers. If the staffs are reluctant to accept such roles and duties, it would undermine the implementation of the intervention measures (Hanson et al., 2017).

Institutional and/or cultural barriers: Cultural issues in institutions and lack of the urge to foster change across the hospitals were noted by the members of the three groups as being major stumbling blocks. A practitioner among the nurses noted that the culture has made it a norm to be contented with the prevailing state of affairs and not demand better or best practice.

In the discussion by the nurses, it emerged that there is a tendency to fall back on what one is used to, as opposed to seeking to employ approaches that are based on evidence (Tacia et al., 2015).

Lack of knowledge: Nurses across the management strata expressed concern that a lot of nurses deployed for inpatient direct care had no knowledge of EBP. They also cannot tell the hallmarks of high-quality research (Tacia et al., 2015).

There is also the need to incorporate support from physicians. Attending conferences, workshops and trainings are important in the implementation of EBP (Tacia et al., 2015).
