People can tell the difference between a violent television show and reports of violence on the news, and are more upset by reports of real violence, even though those reports are less graphic than fictional representations. Therefore, the media does not desensitize people to violence.

Finally, while media portrayals of violence have gotten more graphic, society itself has not become more violent. On the contrary, the channels for discussing that violence have simply become more accessible. For example, the American South during slavery and Jim Crow were replete with violence against African-Americans, but, because that violence was institutionalized and acceptable, there were few media portrayals of that violence.
