Facebook Inc’s Organization

Introduction

The organization of Facebook consists of the company’s top managers and its Board of Directors. Its tope managers are Mark Zuckerberg (CEO), Sheryl Sandberg (COO), Dave Wehner (CFO), Mike Schroepfer (CTO), and Chris Cox (CPO). On the Board are Zuckerberg (as Chairman), Sandberg, Marc Andreessen, Erskine B. Bowles, Kenneth I. Chenault, Susan Desmond-Hellmann, Reed Hastings, Jan Koum, and Peter A. Thiel (Facebook Management, 2018). This paper will identify the role of these key organizational leaders at Facebook and show how their responsibilities tie to the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Mission, Vision and Values

Facebook’s mission statement is: “to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected” (Smithson, 2017). This mission was recently updated to include the goal of giving people “the power to build community and bring the world closer together” (Moscaritolo, 2017).

Facebook’s vision statement is for “people use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them” (Smithson, 2017).

Facebook’s values consists of communication, openness, free society, and the combining of these to facilitate the global market, discovery, and self-expression (Smithson, 2017).

Key Leaders

Mark Zuckerberg

Role. Mark Zuckerberg is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Facebook. Zuckerberg effectively serves as the face of the company, appearing recently before Congress to represent Facebook in the wake of the data sharing scandal that unfolded following the report on Cambridge Analytica’s harvesting of users’ data. Zuckerberg presents the vision, mission, and ideals of Facebook—as he did before Congress—and “leads the design of Facebook's service and development of its core technology and infrastructure” (Facebook Management, 2018). His background is in computer science, which he studied at Harvard prior to relocating to Palo Alto to seek start-up funds for Facebook.

How this leader relates to the company’s mission, vision and values. Zuckerberg is the number one most important individual in the company when it comes to Facebook’s ability to deliver on its mission and vision while maintaining its core values.
Without Zuckerberg, Facebook would not exist, as it was his vision and drive that enabled the company to come into being in the first place. Today, he supports and defines the values of the company and reiterates its mission and vision at all opportunities to ensure that the company is welcomed around the world by users and businesses who seek to profit through advertising by working with data collectors of user profiles so that targeted ads can be placed.

Sheryl Sandberg

Role. Sandberg is the Chief Operating Officer at Facebook and thus oversees the company’s overall business operations. Her previous experience as vice president of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google and chief of staff of the U.S. Treasury under President Clinton helped prepare for this important role.

How this leader relates to the company’s mission, vision and values. Her work ties into the mission of Facebook by ensuring the company is able to be profitable through its collection of user data which Facebook uses as a selling point for advertisers who seek to create targeted digital advertising. As the mission and vision of Facebook is to create a world where communication and community are top priorities (while facilitating the global market), Sandberg helps to ensure that Facebook stays profitable throughout this process.

Dave Wehner

Role. Wehner’s role at Facebook as Chief Financial Officer is to oversee the finance, facilities and information technology departments within the company. Wehner formerly operated as Vice President within the company’s Finance and Business Planning department.

How this leader relates to the company’s mission, vision and values. Wehner is the link between Sandberg, the business side of operations, and Zuckerberg, the values side of operations. Wehner’s job is to make sure that the mission, vision and values of the company are integrated fully into….....
