But just because they had no intent to hurt anyone does not mean that their actions did not contribute to the hurting of another.

After looking at all of the facts that were presented in both of these cases a reasonable person sitting on any jury would have to conclude that the defendants were guilty of contributing to the deaths of the victims. Their deliberate actions led to both accidents and thus all deaths relating to those accidents. The defendants in both of these cases were all over the age of 18 and should have been aware that their actions could lead to serious harm or even death of another person. Just because they were out having fun and did not intentionally mean to hurt anyone should not excuse them from the fact that their actions did lead to deaths, and for these reasons they should be held accountable and punished accordingly.

A reasonable person needs to be aware at all times that their actions, no matter how trivial they may seem, can always have the potential to cause harm upon another.
Ignorance is no excuse and should not be used as a defense in cases such as these. Just because these defendants didn't think that they were doing anything that would hurt someone else does not make their actions excusable. The fact is their actions did hurt someone and for that they should be held accountable.

In these cases appropriate sentencing should be handed down by the judge as to help to deter crimes such as these in the future. Punishment in our current justice system is twofold. It is not only carried out to punish those for the acts that they have done, but also has the use of hopefully deterring others from performing the same acts that these people did. And in the end maybe no other innocent people will have to lose their lives at the pranks carried out by others.
