Rather than further punishment, Cody needs to learn to trust people again. Cody need positive encouragement with consequences only reserved for the worst offenses. Programs that focus on punishment will further add to the pattern of distrust that has already developed.

Cody could benefit from family counseling with his mother. Individual counseling should focus on building self-esteem and learning to control impulsive behavior. His mother could benefit from parenting classes, where she could learn to provide effective reward and punishment. She needs to become aware of how past her past selection of partners and the instability that exists in her home has created the behaviors being displayed by Cody. She needs to understand the underlying cause for Cody's behavior and needs assistance developing a method for managing it more effectively.

Cody's father encourages behaviors that provide Cody the means to commit more violent crimes in the future. Cody's father often teaches him skills such as how to handle and fire a gun. He also occasionally uses illegal substances in front of Cody. He encourages him to learn to "fight like man" and to throw better punches.

These "skills" constitute inappropriate coping behaviors and have the potential to escalate existing behaviors. Although, it is a hard decision, it is probably best if some other visitation arrangement be made than currently exists, perhaps limiting Cody's time with his father, or perhaps supervising visits so that the father cannot teach Cody inappropriate skills for his age.

Punishment-based systems will not teach Cody to control his behavior at this stage in development. According to many theories, Cody is a high-risk for potentially violent crimes or juvenile delinquency in the future. Cody needs to learn consistency in punishment, reward and human interaction. He needs to be in an environment that encourages positive interactions and only resorts to punishment in the right context. With proper therapy and intervention Cody has the potential to correct his antisocial behavior and become a productive member of society......
