Define Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Arizona)

Nurse practitioners are able to assume many of the medical responsibilities once relegated to doctors. The profession arose as a way to provide more personalized and cost-effective care than was possible using physicians alone. Advanced Nurse Practitioners (APNs) are able to obtain intake patient's health histories and perform complete physical examinations. They can diagnose many medical conditions, order and interpret medical tests, and prescribe and manage medicine. They can evaluate care, admit patients, counsel patients on wellness and management of chronic illnesses, and also develop care plans. APN are part of a holistic model of care and frequently collaborate with other healthcare professionals (Services provided by a nurse practitioner, 2011, Arizona Nurse Practitioner Council).

Like a pediatrician, an FPN must deploy astute critical thinking to make effective diagnoses of all family members.
