VI. MULTIDIMENSIONAL THEORIES

Multidimensional models attempt the integration of "several unidimensional theories. Attempts to develop such models flow logically from the failure of single-concept frameworks to account for family violence." (Barnett, Miller and Perrin, 2005) Barnett, Miller and Perrin state that the need "for a multidimensional theory is especially salient when on is attempting to interpret the cause of family violence in other cultures or when one is striving to delineate a worldview.

SUMMARY and CONCLUSION

While many theories exist to attempt to explain family violence, the fact is that researchers in reality remain confounded in their attempt to "posit an inclusive model." (Barnett, Miller and Perrin, 2005) While psychopathological theory attempts to provide an explanation for family violence based on the assumption of the presence of mental illness in those who perpetrate the violence, psychobiological theorists hold that physiological abnormalities are at the heart of family violence. Interpersonal interaction theories hold that both the victim and perpetrators and their interactions serve to promote family violence. Because no one explanation is sufficient in explaining family violence, multidimensional theory development is critically necessary to this end......
