There are various aspects of Courtney’s post that I found interesting, i.e. in relation to the role that folate plays in the body. In the said post, my colleague makes an observation to the effect that folate helps the body utilize amino acids, reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer, prevents congenital disabilities, and helps the red blood cells to proliferate and divide. Apart from the roles highlighted by my colleague, it would be prudent to note that folate plays other crucial roles in the body. For instance, folate plays an important role in fetal development, lactation and pregnancy.1 This is more so the case given that folate is involved in biosynthesis of nucleotides whereby DNA is repaired and synthesized, while homocysteine is re-methylated to methionine. Methionine is then used in protein synthesis.
The other aspect that I found interesting from my colleague’s thread is the physiological processes that are affected by folate deficiency. To understand the said processes, my colleague explains the process of folate metabolism whereby she indicates that folate regulates nucleotide synthesis, DNA methylation, and regulation of amino acid changes.

It is important to note that deficiency of folate in the body leads to a reduction in the said processes. For instance, my colleague highlights the fact that folate deficiency leads to a condition that is referred to as homocysteinemia. Essentially, folate deficiency disrupts the process of re-methylation of homocysteine whereby the process of pyrimidine and purine reduces. In addition, cell division and DNA biosynthesis also reduces.2 As a result, reduction in the said processes causes a reduction in erythrocytes, thus causing anemia. Apart from homocystemia, it would be prudent to note that reduction in methylation cycle in the body affects the nerves, whereby it causes neuropathy.2 This is an interesting post that I learnt from. We should at all times strive to learn from one another as has been indicated in Proverbs 27: 17-27.
