Political Action Committees (PACs) are an integral part of the American political system are legal entities that act on behalf of trade unions, corporations or other organizations in order to make donations to candidates for Federal offices. This something that can not legally be done directly. In this way, they contribute to the election or defeat of particular candidates based upon the issues they represent. While PACS really came into their own in the 1970s and 1980s, they were born in 1944. At that time the Congress of Industrial Organizations, the CIO the present AFL-CIO, wished to aid the re-election of President Franklin Roosevelt.
