future it is predicted that houses will be a lot more family friendly and be built with many features that were not available just a few short years ago. For one thing, with the aging of society in the United States, new homes will be built with a lot more than just child safety locks -- although if the family includes toddlers those are a good idea as well - homes will also be built to assist in the long-term care of elderly grandparents and parents. Kwak and Polivka (2014) recently reported that the resources necessary to even just maintain the current level of services for elderly patients in need of healthcare will triple by 2040. Kwak et al. also states that there will be an increasing number of younger people with physical and intellectual disabilities based upon the fact that longevity is increasing. Many of these people will continue to live in their homes, and builders will take that into consideration. Hallways and doorways will be wider and situated to allow for wheelchairs, bathrooms will have bathtubs that have doors to accommodate the same thing with retractable seating under the shower head. A recent article talked about smart housing being the wave of the future with the idea that a "smart city will combine economic growth with a smaller impact on the environment" (Vitaliev, 2014, p. 46) and that is true of individual houses as well. Not only will the houses be built to optimize wind and solar technology but each house will come equipped with 'smart' features such as wifi accessibility, automatic windows and doors, automatically controlled heating and air conditioning, appliances that sleep without using power, and even water heaters that heat water on demand.

Houses in the future will also be more family friendly with walls that automatically become television sets that automatically discern who is in the room and responds by turning to the most popular channel(s). Additionally, there will be access to computers through the same venue and mirrors that can be programmed to lie (if necessary) or to make comments that ensure the person feels good about herself. Other features will include lights that automatically turn on or off, and adjust to the number of people in the room.
