I see the effects of the past on the present in both my personal life and in the life of my community. For example, the discovery of oil in my country has completely changed the demographics and lifestyle. Those who were lucky enough to reap rewards from the lucrative industry can live lavish lifestyles, travel abroad, and even move, live, and work in Western countries while maintaining a home in Kuwait. The most significant thing I have learned is that while we are masters of our destiny, the past still molds and shapes who we are. The American Dream tells us that we can become whatever we want, as long as we are willing to work for it. However, I do not believe that. We can come whatever we want to a certain extent. The past shapes our beliefs, values, goals, and ideals.

When I asked my parents about their belief systems and how those shaped who they are, they smiled.
They said that they were pulled in several different directions. On the one hand, they were excited and enticed by living abroad and participating more in the world as secular citizens. They wanted to study in the United Kingdom and possibly move from Kuwait forever. My uncle lives in London and never visits us, because he has made a life for himself there. His attitude and vision of the world is progressive; he still identifies himself as Arab but his politics and lack of interest in religion distinguishes himself from many of his relatives and friends. Even my mother, who is a progressive woman, told me that she could never leave her native Kuwait. In spite of the social, political, and economic issues in our country, it is still home. My personal values, ideals, and goals have also been influenced by a respect for culture and tradition that accompanies a broader interest in the greater world around me.
