It was clear that Cain had murdered his brother, an offense that is unthinkable in today's modern context. When Cain refused to admit his sins, God punished him in the same manner as he had punished Adam and Eve. God had cast Cain out of his homeland, just as He had done with Adam and Eve; "And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand. When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth," (Genesis 4:11-12). Cain followed in the footsteps of his earliest ancestors.

This tells a lot about the character of God as represented by the Old Testament. Essentially, He is omni-benevolent when His followers are true to following His demands. In fact, God rewards in great measure. Yet, He can be a powerful force when He is disobeyed or lied to. In this, God is wrathful when the cause is justified, but still soft and caring to human beings who listen.

Another example from Genesis shows this other side of God that counteracts the image of wrath; this is the example of Noah in chapter six of Genesis. When mankind began to lean towards wickedness, God knew he had to take wrathful and drastic actions to punish them for their sins. Yet, not all men were evil. In fact, God renewed His faith in mankind thanks to the actions of a single man -- Noah. God warned Noah about the coming flood. Noah's adherence to God's will and his devotion to protecting the other creatures in God's kingdom saved Noah from the disastrous flood; "every living thing that moved on the earth perished," all except for Noah and company (Genesis 7:21). Noah had listened to God's warnings, and a year lived on the tiny quarters of his boat. In fact, God was so pleased with Noah's faith and performance in executing His will, God promised never again to cause such global devastation (Genesis 8:21). Despite the ability for God to punish, He can also prove quite rewarding….....
