Jamaican Kincaid

The text gives account of the death of Devon Drew, who is the young brother of Kincaid, occurring as a result of AIDS. One of the aspects that can be perceived in the text is the challenging aspects that Kincaid faces, and that is of her aspiration to forgive the anguish brought about by the narcissism of her mother, and the self-destructiveness of her brother (Kincaid, 1998).

The other aspect is whether she needs to separate herself from the agony she is facing and its committers or not. In reaction to the text, Kincaid is determined to be a very kindhearted caregiver to her brother. It can also be perceived that she largely feels love and disdain for her brother. In addition, Kincaid still places a lot of blame on her mother with respect to the neglect that she experienced in her childhood, and also the abuse that she went through (Kincaid, 1998).

A lot can be learned from the familiar and cultural narratives of Kincaid. One of them is that the narrative is very much about life and death. It is not just lightly about family and the disease AIDS, but it is largely regarding the manner in which both economic and financial poverty as well as emotional poverty has destroyed the body and soul. It takes into account the glue that ties brothers to their sisters, daughters to their mothers, and also what links grown-ups to their upbringings, regardless of how far they go (Kincaid, 1998).
