This was ultimately Ligon's ambition, to create a response to some of the more pressing issues that he has faced in his life and those that are close to him or that he admires.

Other works that Ligon has created have significantly different themes. One example is the set of neon works that Ligon has created. In one work, he produced a line from a 1909 novel and used the words "negro sunshine." This work is undoubtedly meant to inspire African-Americans and offer a thought provoking phrase that could make one ponder what the meaning was. The phrase did not offer any objective advice or any concrete meaning; rather it made the viewer create their own subjective interpretation of what the sunshine might be. It could be viewed as a new day in for African-Americans and the struggle for equality continues to progress forward.
