" (Sanghavi, 2013) Gluten intolerance is frustrating since some people have problems with consuming gluten that is not autoimmune or allergic problems. It has been indicated by some research that depression, arthritis, social phobias, or epilepsy among other various problems could be associated with gluten intolerance. (Sanghavi, 2013, paraphrased) the work of Holmes, et al. (1989) reported a study conducted among 210 celiac disease patients with the diet of the individuals and its effect on malignancy. The study reports that 12 new cancers occurred with one being carcinoma of the esophagus and two lymphomas. The report states that 39 cancers developed in 38 patients with a report of 69 deaths and 33 of these deaths being due to malignancy. The study concludes that a gluten-free diet is important in celiac patient's avoidance of developing cancer. A separate study reported in the work of Vehmanen, Partanen and Hockerstedt (1991) states that the mechanisms that underlie liver injury in celiac disease are not well understood. Malnutrition is reported as being common in addition to "the elevation of aminotranferase levels" which together is likely to be the only presenting features in patients with celiac disease. The study reported examined four patients with untreated celiac disease and severe liver disease. The study concluded that the presence of liver disease should be investigated in individuals with severe liver disease because dietary treatment "may prevent progression to hepatic failure, even in cases in which liver transplantation is considered." (Vehmanen, Partanen and Hockerstedt, 1991) a 2002 study reported in the work of Greco, Troncone, Auricchio and Marsh, which included "A cohort of 123 patients with celiac disease, diagnosed in the first three years of life and followed up for at least 10 years.

Occasional intake of small amounts (0.06-2 g/day) of gluten did not produce increased concentrations of antigliadin antibodies but resulted in an appreciably increased crypt epithelial volume and expanded crypt intraepithelial lymphocyte population." (Greco, Troncone, Auricchio and Marsh, 2002)

It is clear that for individuals with celiac disease, a gluten-free diet is critically important to avoid many possible conditions that stem from celiac disease and the ongoing consumption of gluten in the diet of the individual with celiac disease.
