It happens to everyone who gets behind the wheel of a car. You are rolling along, when suddenly the cars in front of you come to a standstill. There is no red light but you soon realize you are frozen in space. What causes a traffic jam? According to the Freakanomics blog, the usual reason for a traffic jam is that "one driver's slowing down creates a ripple effect that moves backwards through traffic, grinding everything to a halt for miles" (What causes traffic jams," Freakanomics, 2008). Traffic jams illustrate how even a small error can cause major headaches for countless numbers of people. Rubber-necking during an accident; a slow driver refusing to get out of the left lane; or improper direction of traffic when one lane is closed can all create miles of congested roads.
