graduate students in counseling programs to learn theories? Graduate students in counseling programs are required to learn counseling theories because of their significance in the profession. It's important for graduate students in such programs to learn counseling theories for a variety of reasons. First, theory is the essential framework and building block for counselors in training (Lofrisco, 2013). Without having a solid foundation and understanding of theory, students in counseling programs cannot succeed as effective counselors. Secondly, theory helps inexperienced counselors get understanding of the concepts they need to put into action by serving as a road map for the career. When a counselor sets goals for a client, he/she needs to have a justification for setting those goals. Third, counseling theories not only help novice counselors to become knowledgeable but also make professional counselors look impressive while carrying out their work.

2) What do you know about counseling and psychotherapy theories?

My understanding of counseling and psychotherapy theories is elementary. Counselors who use psychotherapeutic approaches try to determine the underlining problem of the client by understanding the individual's past and unconsciousness. There are five different categories of psychotherapy theories i.e. psychoanalysis and psychodynamics therapies, behavior theory, cognitive therapy, humanistic therapy and integrative therapies.
These categories of psychotherapy theories represent different categories of therapy, which are used for different purposes depending on the client's situation. In essence, counselors usually determine the most appropriate psychotherapy for a client depending on his/her situation.

3) What do you know about counseling/psychotherapy theories and multiculturalism?

An understanding of counseling/psychotherapy theories in relation to multiculturalism is also fundamental for success in this field. I know that multicultural counseling theory focuses on helping a client within the context of his/her own culture. Multicultural counseling recognizes the fact that every culture has a different outlook on life and values (Short, 2016). This kind of approach stems away from the typical white middle- class culture and comes up with goals and treatment plans based on the client's own ethnicity and culture. Counselors using the multicultural approach also try to help the clients see how their problems and difficulties maybe associated with societal issues and differences such as race, ethnicity, and gender.

4) What would you like to learn about counseling theories in this class?

I want to have an understanding of all the major theories used in counseling. I would also like to learn which theories….....
