The lab will involve testing household products to use as cleaning agents. During the lab students will wear gloves and if necessary masks.

Educational goal: To understand the 12 principles of green chemistry and the scientific method

Student objectives: Students will understand and apply the 12 principles of green chemistry.

Materials: Vinegar, baking soda, bleach, and household cleansers

Time required: Three days of research, brainstorming, and finally a lab day.

National standards met: S1, S2, S6, S7

Green chemistry principles addressed: 1-12

Teacher prep: Researching the dangers of common commercial household cleansers.

Procedure:

In class, students will write out the 12 principles in their own words in simple language. The class will come to a common definition for all 12 principles. Then students on their own will be asked to pick a household cleaning product and research online whether the manufacture upholds these principles.

In class, students will be asked to create their own cleaning products using environmentally-friendly materials that reflect 12 principles of green chemistry. The class will brainstorm ingredients (baking soda, white vinegar, bleach) that could replace one or more of the less environmentally-friendly products they researched.

In labs of three, students will create their new products using the brainstormed materials.

Students will compare the agents they created that are 'green' with the commercial household cleansers and rate them for efficacy.

Students will create a compare/contrast table of the original product they selected and the new cleaning product they created of positives and negatives

Students will write up the lab in groups detailing the positives of the green method and also any negatives they noted (such as an unpleasant smell or lack of efficacy).
