Different forms of therapy are effective for different conditions. No one type of therapy can be effective for all people under all circumstances. However, I believe that when the person's issue is interpersonal in nature, as many problems are, that group therapy can be an effective intervention.

Group therapy can be helpful for people with social problems like social anxiety disorder, because it helps the person to become more aware of the exact sources of the anxiety, such as fear of embarrassment or shame. Another benefit of group therapy is that the members of the group each have their own point-of-view and perspective, allowing the person to benefit from the diversity of the group. Group therapy can help a person to work out their interpersonal or relationship problems by allowing the members of the group to role play with them or engage in a difficult dialogue. This will allow the person the opportunity to practice developing communication skills. Some groups are designed as support groups for people undergoing acute issues like grief or who have been diagnosed with a disease (Johnson, 2016).

Group therapy also offers the chance to practice listening, which is something that individualized therapy does not allow.

When in the group, the person may remain quiet much of the time, and this also encourages the person to develop the quality of listening skills needed to communicate more effectively in their interpersonal relationships. Group therapy can also help the person to develop empathy and compassion for other people as they listen to different types of problems. One's problems are put into perspective. Although the quality of the group therapy will vary depending on the therapist leading the group and the composition of the group, generally group therapy needs to be moderated by a professional. The type of group therapy represented by the Twelve Step group is not as effective because it is not led by professionals but by other people who are seeking treatment. Finally, I believe that psychiatric medications are overprescribed for some disorders but they can be effective in cases where the individual benefits clearly from pharmacological interventions or when there is a biological cause for the disorder.
