statistical data is important in any quantitative research, but even of more significance is if the statistics captured therein can be interpreted into meaningful information that can be absorbed and well understood by the targeted individuals. In the case presented, there are various ways that John and Jane could use to correctly interpret the statistics presented by the media and filter out the accurate number of the uninsured Americans. One of the ways to interpret the data they get from the media is presenting the data graphically. This involves use of bar chart and pie chart/diagram in an instance where the data being handled is nominal data as is the case here. Such graphic methods will allow John and Jane to carry out an easy visual assessment of the data presented by the media and see if the representation is real or could be skewed.

The other approach is the use of Z-Score to a percentile rank which is a six sigma technique. It is used to convert the raw data or score into normal score. This will hence make the rating scale be easier since it often follows the normal or the close to normal distribution. Hence, Jane and John just need a reasonable benchmark against which they can compare the mean to. The reasonable benchmark can be subtracted from the mean and the difference divided by the standard deviation and that is what is called the Z-Score and when this is converted to a percentile hence giving a clear interpretation of the statistics (Sauro J., 2011).
Another commonly used approach is the use of ANOVA which is the analysis of variation which will help in finding out the significance level of the data that is represented by the media houses. The significance level will hence help in showing whether the data presented is reality and also filter out the different media houses and determine which one is closest to the reality.
