"But we did kill a lot of resources," said Beck. That having been said, Beck does believe that some habitat losses -- and some that occurred prior to the oil spill -- can be "re-engineered" if the marshes receive the attention they deserve to receive.

Meanwhile, the assertion that the oil has dissipated and there is "very little" oil that is recoverable goes against the tone of a story in USA Today (Jervis, 2010, p. 3A) on October 19. Jervis writes that "Swaths of fresh oil flatten miles of march grass and cane weeds" in Bay Jimmy in Louisiana. Indeed, although BP has pulled back workers, more than 32,000 gallons of oil were removed (sucked out by industrial vacuum cleaners operated by workers in hazardous materials suits) during a recent 10-day period in Bay Jimmy (Jervis).

"People think it's over," said P.J. Hahn, the coastal zone director for Plaquemines Parish. "But look around us," Hahn insisted. "It looks like the first day it hit." Jervis puts the number of responders still cleaning up oil at 16,200, more than Kirkham reports, but the fact remains that there are still 28 miles of Louisiana shorelines -- down from 54 miles in early July -- with "at least a half an inch of oil" remaining to be cleaned up, according to Jervis' report in USA Today.

If there is so much oil yet to remove, why is BP pulling back its responders? Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser believes that BP is scaling back "…as quickly as possible to declare victory and head home." The fewer oil workers there are the "smaller the crisis," Nungesser asserts. "They want it all to just go away," says Nungesser in Jervis' article, "and we're not going to let them do it."

It's interesting to note that BP has very recently agreed to sell assets in Vietnam and Venezuela (worth around $1.8 billion) to a Russian oil venture company (TNK-BP) (Bates, 2010, AOL News). This transaction, Bates writes, was conducted in order for BP to "…help pay for damages incurred after the April explosion" on the Deepwater Horizon rig. Bates writes that BP intends to sell sufficient assets by the end of 2011 in order to raise $30 billion.

Conclusion: According to the Audubon Society (www.wkrg.com) 6,104 dead birds have been gathered on the Gulf Coast since the spill; but 2,080 oiled birds were cleaned and released.
