Some doctors believe that genetic factors are the core cause of a lot of eating disorders. Researchers have found specific chromosomes that may be associated with bulimia and anorexia, specifically regions on chromosome 10 that have been linked to bulimia as well as obesity. There has been evidence that has shown that there is an association with genetic factors being responsible for serotonin, the brain chemical involved with both well-being and appetite. Researchers have also determined that certain proteins such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are thought to influence a person's vulnerability to developing an eating disorder (Eating disorders -- Causes, 2010).

Women are more apt to suffer from an eating disorder than a man is. Many experts feel that this can attributed to the fact that society puts a lot of pressure on women to be thin. Although the specific cause of eating disorders has yet to be determined, medical professionals know for sure that it can be a very deadly disease that needs immediate treatment. The early that this disease is diagnosed and treated the better off a person will be in the end. Because of the fact that this disease often occurs with other disorders it makes it very dangerous if left untreated. Eating disorders are very treatable if they are diagnosed and treatment is received. Treatment is often needed over a long period of time before a person can consider themselves cured.
