Health policy and initiatives are used to guide and direct my clinical practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) by directing my work towards the Triple Aim of healthcare: 1) improved care, 2) improved health and 3) at lower cost (Hain & Fleck, 2014). However, barriers to these three goals still exist, and policies like that of the IOM (2011) report help to identify the obstacles so that APNs can help to be aware of the challenges they will face when they go to provide quality care to patients.

As the IOM (2011) reports, one of the obstacles is the nursing shortage. In my practice, I can help staff to be aware of the problems that lead nurses to want to exit the industry—problems such as overwork, stress, fatigue, burnout, and low job satisfaction. By working to improve the morale of nurses in my sector and promoting a positive workplace environment where nurses can feel good about their job, I can help to reduce this obstacle.

One way to help improve morale is to promote the use of technology like telehealth to help ease the burden that nurses now face. Telehealth is a modern form of nursing that can allows nurses to focus on multiple patients at once, be more attentive to their duties, and fulfill their mission of quality care more effectively.

The IOM’s policy of reducing the nursing shortage depends upon nurses also achieving more education, and this is something I also want to do. I want to continue my education so that I can be aware of the latest developments in nursing, implement the most effective evidence-based practices, and be at the forefront of the industry so that I can lead other nurses by example. By dedicating myself to continual improvement, I can support the nursing industry and help create a better environment where nurses will want to stay.
