The benefits of aerobic exercise include a strengthening of the respiratory muscles and heart, core muscle toning and increasing the body's number of red blood cells. Further, aerobic exercise improves the muscles' ability to use fats during exercise, thus burning fat.

However, some critics argue that the opposite is actually true and that in fact strength training anaerobic exercises are in fact more effective at reducing obesity. According to this line of research, aerobics does not increase the resting metabolic rate as much as some anaerobic exercise does, therefore being less effective at reducing obesity. However, on the other hand, aerobic exercise does allow for longer and more frequent activity that consumes more energy, otherwise known as fat. More so, the metabolic, or fat burning activity, of the individual is higher for an estimated several hours following the aerobic activity.


What can be taken away from this information is that the best way to assist a client with losing weight is to place them on an appropriate exercise plan that utilizes both aerobic and anaerobic exercises. One thing the nurse or healthcare professional must consider first is how obese the client is. Those who are clearly obese will benefit from an exercise program that, at least at first, focuses on an anaerobic regiment. However, overall, in order to encourage the body to both burn fat during periods of exercise (aerobic) and during times of rest (anaerobic), the client looking to lose weight or maintain their current weight should use both aerobic and anaerobic forms of exercise......
