Reflection on Healthcare Delivery Models and Nurse’s Role in Public Health

Since commencing this RN-BSN program at West Coast University, my perception of healthcare delivery models and the role of nurses in public health programs has evolved. Prior to undertaking the course, I did not know that there are different healthcare delivery models since I believed that healthcare delivery is basically about providing care services to patients. I also believed that public health programs are simply policies enacted by the government to promote health. However, the course has changed my perception about healthcare delivery through enabling to understand that there are different healthcare delivery models with different roles for members of the clinical team. Through lessons learned from this course, the healthcare delivery models I support are acute care models, transitional care models, and the collaborative payer model because they are innovative care models through which nurses become care coordinators rather than care providers (Beattie, 2016).

The course has also helped me to understand that public health programs are different and have different objectives in relation to health promotion and disease prevention. The public health programs I am familiar with include the Immune LA Kids Coalition and Healthy Eating, Active Communities (HEAC). These programs are similar in the sense that they are community-based public health interventions and were founded as part of CDC’s initiative to fund communities to help lessen the burden of chronic diseases among children (Trust for America’s Health, n.d.).

However, they differ in the sense that the Immune LA Kids Coalition focuses on promoting the use of culturally appropriate immunizations. In contrast, Healthy Eating, Active Communities (HEAC) focuses on lessening disparities in diabetes and obesity through enhancing food and physical fitness among school-age children.

My academic work has enabled me to achieve different evidence-based practice model outcomes including outcomes #2, #5, #6 and #7. In relation to Outcome#2, I have conducted an exploration of how nurses utilize research studies and evidence in their clinical and operational undertakings/procedures. The exploration provided a basis for me to understand the role of research and scientific evidence in nursing practice and clinical processes. The two basic elements of research process and models learned in this process are robust scientific evidence and compassionate and effective care.
