Obviously the senator encourages the funding of both Medicaid and Medicare as she has fought to ensure that both are funded correctly. Collins was also a supporter of the stimulus package that improves healthcare information technology.

As it pertains to abortions Susan Collins is also pro-choice and believes in stem cell research. She is adamant about the right of a woman to choose just as Senator Kennedy. She also voted no on prohibiting HHS grants to organization who perform abortions. She has also been a proponent of expanding stem cell research.

In both the present and the past Collins has worked to ensure that healthcare coverage is affordable. From the bill that she coauthored with Senator Kennedy to her current effort to get universal healthcare legislation passed. Recently she has sponsored the funding of biomedical research for the Maine Medical Center ("Funding for Biomedical Research…").

Healthcare reform is an issue throughout the United States. As it relates specifically to Illinois the passing of the healthcare bill that makes healthcare affordable to citizens will decrease the number of people who are not currently covered. The impact of universal healthcare as a whole is dependent upon how much it costs. The costs of universal healthcare seems to be up for question. If the costs associated with universal healthcare is too expensive, the benefit might not be as significant. On the other hand many people who do not currently have health insurance might benefit greatly from the Universal healthcare coverage.

Nurses will also be affect by universal healthcare coverage. As it is nurses often have to work long hours to meet the needs of patients and universal healthcare may put greater pressures on nurses because they will have a greater volume of patients. As such the effect of universal healthcare on nurses must also be considered as this particular piece of legislation is reformed.
