Writing skills are crucial for success in many fields not typically associated with paperwork, such as in law enforcement, advertising, and engineering careers, for just a few examples. Higher education allows students to improve their writing skills and even to perfect their non-written verbal communication skills by encouraging intellectual discussion and argument in many classes.

By the time students begin a course of undergraduate study, many are already computer literate, at least in the sense of using computers to communicate via e-mail and personal messaging programs. However, many students are not as familiar with other useful computer applications, particularly when it comes to using the Internet to do formal research. In most professional environments, the ability to use the Internet and internal computer intranet networks is critically important.

While it does not actually fall within the academic realm, higher education also enables students to improve and develop their socialization and people skills that are essential to success in virtually every conceivable work environment. Likewise, for many students, college is the first opportunity to manage their own daily affairs where they are responsible for managing their time, getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthful diet, doing their own laundry, managing a checking account, and driving responsibly, to list just a few. In many of these respects, higher (college campus) education becomes a crash course in adulthood, preparing students for responsible adult lives beyond merely their academic or vocational concerns.
In much the same respect, the independence of campus life also provides the opportunity to explore intimate social relationships in ways that many students never had the chance to experience while living at home. Finally, the everyday realities of campus life enables students to socialize with others from different backgrounds and cultures of origin. It fosters both familiarity with, and respect for, individuals with very different core beliefs and attitudes. Because much of the social environment of campus-based higher education is unsupervised, it allows students to question their own fundamental assumptions and to develop independent moral values. Ultimately, higher education contributes to the development of both academic (or vocationally relevant) skills, and equally to areas of personal development that contribute to lifetime personal happiness, and to vocational and professional success......
