You're going to get better -- it's just going to take some time," I said, holding her hand. "But you know it's ok to be angry. You can accept your reality and at the same time fight it."

She stared at me quizzically, furrowing her brow. "What exactly are you trying to say?" she asked.

I thought I made myself perfectly clear. As I stared at my friend, who had recently been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, I suddenly realized what a barrier language can be in human communications. I squeezed her hand, somehow hoping that I could transmit my thoughts to her through our skin. When that didn't work, Loreen repeated her herself. "I really don't know what you mean." sighed and released my grip on her soft, cold hand. I knew I could never truly understand what Loreen was going through and I didn't want to come across as being trite or thoughtless. At the same time I wanted to offer some kind of wisdom and encouragement.
