Human Resources Scenario

The author of this report is asked to respond and answer to a human resources scenario. First off, the author is to propose two strategies that a human resources manager could use to determine if an employee has the specific skill set required to fill a position. Next, the author will select a functional area that will be pursued as part of a wider career strategy. The functional areas to choose from are employment, employee relations, training/development, compensation, benefits and labor relations. The author will specify two skills that are current possessed and two others that will need to be developed as part of being in the chosen career area. The author will provide support for that latter answer. While human resources is a fairly broad field with a lot of directions that one can go career-wise, there are some core skills that any accomplished or prospective human resources professional should have.

Analysis

The two tactics that the author of this report would employ as a hiring manager trying to match skills of an applicant to a position would be a skills test administers onsite and an assessment of relevant experience in the resume provided by the applicant.
The resume can be used as a way to fairly quickly figure out if the applicant has been in prior positions where the needed skills would have been done as a normal part of the job. The resume could also be used to see if there are any industry-relevant certifications that pertain to the job at hand because it would be an unbiased third party sign-off on the person having a certain amount of knowledge. For example, if the author were hiring for a computer hardware technician, seeing an A+ computer hardware certification on a resume would be a very good sign, if not a requirement for the job. The onsite skills test would be a check that the verbiage and skills touted in the resume were not fluff and bluster. However, the author would make sure to use a test that is effective at predicting success on the job because that would come into question if an applicant disputed not getting an interview or an eventual hire.
