Immigration

As Metzler and Off (2018) point out, the Hispanic population in North Carolina is changing the geography of one of the state’s most important cities and surrounding county—Charlotte: “North Carolina’s Hispanic population has grown faster [in Mecklenburg County] since 2010 than both the white and the black population, according to recently released Census data estimates.” Metzler and Off (2018) report on this finding in The Charlotte Observer in an article published June 25th, 2018. This development is, therefore, very current—but in effect it has been happening for years as more and more Hispanic immigrants travel to the city and the surrounding suburban areas.

The Hispanics have altered the city and the county of Mecklenburg in various ways—but especially in the need for services like health care, which many impoverished immigrants cannot afford to obtain on their own. The Hispanic community provides signs and services for members of their own population—preserving authentic foods and recipes with convenience stores that cater to the Hispanic population and display signs in Spanish, the language of the Latino community. Services like tax preparation are also provided by and for Hispanics in this community as well. Large segments are entirely Hispanic and education services have also been oriented around addressing the needs of this population.

Metzler and Off (2018) note that the Hispanic population is on the rise in other parts of the state as well, while white and black populations are declining, indicating that the demographic of the state is changing overall and that there is going to be a distinct shift in the way the geographical areas in which Hispanics are numerous is formed over time. More and more services and signs will be presented in Spanish, from shopping signs and advertisements to jobs seeking workers.

This development in Charlotte, North Carolina, and through other parts of the state ties into the material covered this week in the class in the sense that this population is changing more than just how these areas look and feel. This population is also changing how these areas vote—so there is a political aspect to the migrant movement as well that will impact elections at both the local and the national levels. The socio-political impact of these migrant population is important to consider because it affects policy decisions made by leaders at all levels of public service.
