Education Affects HCAHP Scores

Patient Education regarding the diagnoses and medications based on a decline of competent staff having the disposition to speak to patients in a professional level can be challenging, which can create a misunderstanding of patient information. Meanwhile, it is important to assess the patient's understanding by collecting their feedback through survey question. Essentially, it is critical to ask the question randomly to minimize prejudice, increase the patient understanding and avoid misinterpretation of information. While the average high school graduates read when at 7th grade, however, patient education and written materials should start at a 5th grade. Discharging information and education need to be more elaborate and user- friendly based on the patient's educational level.

Although it is challenging for an urban hospital to initiate the project, nevertheless, providing patient education at a 5th-grade education level can improve the patient experience and ultimately increase the hospital's HCAHPS scores. However, hospitals can record lower scores if they do not spend the adequate time in delivering patient education. In essence, many patients after being discharged from the hospital do not understand the discharged instructions because the instructions are tailored to people with higher reading levels. Additional indicators affecting education that impacts HCAHP scores include distracting environment where what is learned is forgotten after two days. Moreover, patients may be disinterested in teaching after being discharged from the hospital.

Education delays can exist based on different reasons. People with mental health illness such as depression and anxiety are less prone doing things that involve tedious effort. For example, taking surveys may be harder to do versus watching a video.
