The modern society is characterized by different issues that face race, ethnicity, culture, and gender. Most of these varying issues in today's society are centered on individual rights because of the increased likelihood of discrimination or prejudice based on different factors including race, gender, ethnicity, and culture. One of the major issues that need to be addressed in today's society is inequality in the United States education system. This is an issue that requires urgent attention because education systems not only reflect inequality levels in the society but also act as indicators of inequality levels for future generations. The increased levels of inequality in the United States education system reflect the level of inequalities in other sectors in the country given the impact on education on these societal facets and aspects.

Generally, education is one of the most important functions of the government because it is the foundation upon which good citizenship is developed. In modern society, education is the essential instrument in shaping cultural values, preparing individuals for future professional training, and helping people make necessary adjustments to the environment (Cordes & Miller, n.d.). Actually, the likelihood of an individual to succeed in life is significantly affected by the opportunity he/she has for education.
Increasing equality in education is regarded as the principal solution and means of lessening the gap between the rich and the poor in the United States as well as addressing other inequality issues.

Inequality in the U.S. education system is deeply rooted in the history of the country, which is filled with bias, segregation, and inequalities for the poor and minority populations. In the early years of the nation's development, certain minorities like the black population were segregated in the education system through placement in schools with inadequate financial resources. This forced the minorities and the poor to experience inferior education unlike the majority because their school districts and schools could not afford adequate facilities and quality teachers. Following a ruling that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, the federal government adopted several initiatives to end the system and culture of legalized segregation in public schools, particularly southern schools. These initiatives have been accompanied by transformation of the federal government's role in the education system.
