Curriculum-based assessment is a very important tool in education for regular students and those with disabilities. Working with students that have disabilities is not easy because a lot of the assessment methods used for them are not that effective. As the article pointed out, in the past, students with ordinary or severe disabilities were every so often excused from the large-scale assessments that were an important constituent of school reform.

The National Center for Education Outcomes (NCEO), in the mid-1990s, brought in a lot of attention to this practice. This was important because it noted that students not involved in accountability systems could with no trouble be avoided in efforts to determine educational development. From the time when the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Amendments of 1997, the addition of all students with disabilities in accountability systems has been obligatory (Browder, 2015). This has been a good thing because it caused some schools to enforce this policy. It is needed in the classroom because students who are incapable of taking part in large-scale assessments with adjustments must be specified a different assessment. The IDEA Amendments likewise made it mandatory that all students have admission to the general curriculum, just like normal students. Being a teacher that has worked with students that have disabilities, this is very beneficial.

The Importance of Modification

Assessments for all students in the classroom and those that have disabilities need to be modified with specially designed instructions if needed.
