Infrastructure Projects

The author of this report is asked to observe the fact that the most critical and pervasive projects in the project management sphere are infrastructure and service projects. However, it would seem that these same types of projects are also the most likely to fail or at least encounter minor/major problems. The author of this response is asked to define why that might be the case and what can be done to prevent this. When it comes to things like infrastructure, this would obviously refer to things like bridges, roads and the associated signage, markings and planning. Perhaps one reason why these projects are so apt to fail or have problems is the sheer geographic scope and the amount of materials involved. Indeed, an angle being slightly off or the plans being slightly off-kilter can lead to major issues. Another major concern that probably arises when it comes to infrastructure projects is lack of proper or accurate documentation about what is presently in place, when it was done, how it was done and so forth. Other factors might include surrounding soil, abutments and other areas that might have an effect on what is otherwise being worked on nearby (Milutnovi & Stosi, 2013).


As far as how to avoid this, one major thing to have in place is the proper personnel. The people managing and executing the job need to be properly licensed, well-experienced and they need to be very good at their job. Second, a full 360 degree approach to what a project requires and the ancillary geography and other factors that can affect the project should all be taken into account. This could include things like the expected weather, the traffic volume in the area, whether the right materials are being used, the soil composition of the area and how accurate the records are. If something amiss is found, it should be studied fully so as to make the proper adjustments. It is vital to fully and document everything about the project and make sure it is available for future parties that will work in or around the area (Milutnovi & Stosi, 2013).
