Instructions for building the lift device

Step

Instructions

Step One

Using wood saw, cut all wooden pieces (Part Nos. W1, W2 and WS1-WS4) to desired dimensions (or have this step completed by hardware store/home improvement center where purchased).

Step Two

Fabricate the lifting device framework by connecting Part Nos. WS1 to WS2 as well as WS3 to WS4 at their midpoints.

Step Three

Mount the scissor lift device on the base (Part No. W1) using nails and screws.

Step Four

Install the spring (Part S) between the two spars (Parts Nos. WS1 and WS2).

Step Five

Install the second piece of wood (Part No. W2) on the top of the lifting device to serve as the canister platform.

Testing and Risk Assessment

The testing of the device proceeded in a step-wise fashion, beginning with preliminary tests of the springs and how they interacted with the other apparatus components. After preliminary testing achieved satisfactory results, the remaining tests proceeded as each step of construction was completed to ensure that everything operated together as intended.
Unfortunately, a number of constraints were encountered during both the manufacture and testing of the device that limited the number of real-world chances for testing, with the additional concern that the device would become damaged during the testing process to the extent that it would not be available in time for submission.

Despite these obstacles, it was possible to develop a risk assessment concerning the need for additional tests vs. The potential for disaster, and a sufficient number of preliminary and progressive tests were conducted to help identify problems in the apparatus that required fine tuning, including the use of wood adhesive in some locations rather than nails or screws, the fragility of the spring-driven wooden spars that were used to conduct the lift, and the need for consistent reliability of its operation.
