Intern Statement

Boston University is a 150-year-old institution located in Boston Massachusetts on the banks of the Charles River. At least 30,000 students attend the university, from around the country and the world. I am one of those students, and I just served as an intern at Boston University in the Distance Education center.

This was my first job and I worked as an intern web designer for the Distance Learning education center. I did not actually do the web design, but I did the small things, such as web maintenance, graphics, and updating the web site with new course materials, news, and registration information. My major was graphic design, and so I expected to work mostly on graphics and design of web pages, but in reality I was able to learn much more about the technical side of computers and the web. I was also able to learn more about interactive web classes and how they are created and uploaded to the Internet. I especially enjoyed learning more about creating web pages - how to design and implement them. I learned some basic web page coding techniques in HTML and XML, and discovered coding web pages (basic ones anyway), is quite simple.

I was doing basic coding after a day or two of study and practice. Of course, there are much more complicated coding languages used for web pages, which I did not deal with, but I enjoyed learning the basics.

A learned quite a bit from this internship. First, I was not that familiar with the distance education portion of the university, and so I learned how courses online and via video and satellite. I learned about the details of distance learning, and how students enroll, get credit, and participate in these distance learning courses. It was very interesting, and I enjoyed my experience very much.
