There has always been much controversy regarding the importance of family in regard to the significance of friends in one's life. The "blood is thicker than water" saying is very old and it stands as proof that certain segments of society have been inclined to consider that family is indeed more important than friends. One of the main reasons for which this can be true is the fact that family members have obligations toward each other. Family is a priority for most people, as they would choose their family over their friends when they have to do so. Family members are the first to intervene when someone needs help because they feel that it is their duty to assist the respective individual any way that they can.

Whereas one has the liberty of choosing his or her friends, he or she cannot choose their own family. This makes it difficult for them not to step in when they are needed and supports the belief that family considers that it is essential to assist their kin. A friend has priorities and he or she is unlikely to drop everything in order to assist his or her friend. Even though he or she might consider that they should help a friend in need, the assistance that they are willing to provide is limited and would in most cases emphasize the difference between family and friends. Some are hesitant about asking their families for help if they consider that a particular situation does not require special assistance.

Friends might also be inclined to ensure that one's safety is ensured, but will feel that it is more important for them to have fun by engaging in hazardous activities.
