The impact of the IOM report on nursing education.

The IOM report had an impact on nursing education by transforming the focus. This is occurring by concentrating on a number of different areas to include: basic standards and continuing education. The combination of these elements is changing the nurses' role (based upon needs of stakeholders). ("A Summary of the February 2010 Forum," 2010)

Altering the basic standards is when there is focus on how to attract and retain more graduates. What the report found is that there should be a number of tools used in conjunction with each other to include: loan forgiveness, scholarships and special awards. These techniques will increase the amount of candidates who qualify. Over the course of time, this ensures that the health care system has enough nurses to address the needs of patients. Continuing education is an important part of helping to improve professionalism. This is because everyone will learn about new procedures and how to utilize them. After going through a number of courses, is the point that the individual will develop a lifelong passion for learning. This is when they will seek out advanced degrees and training to deal with these challenges.

These different elements are showing how nursing education is changing. This is occurring through providing students with greater amounts of flexibility in meeting basic standards. Then, having them go through various continuing education courses to develop a lifelong passion for learning new ideas. The impact of the IOM report is to transform the role of nurses in a primary care setting. The way that this is taking place is to utilize their time more efficiently. This is because most practitioners will spend 55.9% of their time focusing on documentation and coordinating with other professionals.
