He carefully dismantled the story through diligent research into declassified court proceedings as well as many first person narratives. This level of research successfully captures the tension and emotions of the POWs' experience, which is the primary narrative storyline that drives the overall progression. Although Bradley professes a completely unbiased perspective in looking at this narrative, this was not completely the case within the structure of the narrative. Bradley appears to be heavily sympathetic to the Japanese, who he portrays in many cases as the victims of the second World War. The actions committed by the Japanese are attributed to their allegiance to tradition and reactionary measures taken in the wake of U.S. committed atrocities such as the Doolittle bombings.

Overall however this book is an extremely worthwhile read. The actual book is a very "tough read," because Bradley chooses not to hold back on the details of the POWs deaths and other atrocities which he vividly paints for the reader. However, in its narrative, we learn a greater sense of the meaninglessness of war. Bradley ultimately conveys the sense that while the war is an impersonal battle carried out by armies, commanders and conflicting visions of glory, the real battles were fought by real people who can act in both grand displays of courage, as well as perform deeply despicable acts......
